Acting Career: An Actor's Head Shots and It's Importance
An actor's head shots are the make or break in whether a casting director decides to call you back or not. I suggest you read up on what an excellent head shot is and what a casting director expects when they are looking through them.

In this letter to you, I offer some tips, and some do's and do n'ts on head shots.

Your head shots should always tell a story. They should basically offer a narrative to the eyes of a casting director. The casting director needs to be able to consider your picture and be able to connect with you and know who you are as an actor and as a general human being.

Your head shots should always be kept current. If a casting director calls you in for a reading and you don't look like you do in your head shot becasue it is out of date, it will definitely not be a good look for ya;).

So make sure that you are geting new head shots every year at the least. Change them depending on how much YOU CHANGE. So if you change your hair or your face looks diffderent for any odd reason, then you better give that photographer another call !!

As far as kids, they should be getting their head shots done at least every 7 months. This is for obvious reasons,. A kid facial features grow and change at a steady rate and you want to make sure that your kid's head shots are keeping up with his/her puberty !!

There are 2 kinds of headshots and you need to have both in your arsenal for your acting career.

There are Commmercial Head shots and Theatrical Head Shots.

Commercial Headshots should be more attractive and warmer toned becasue these are the ones that you will use to gain the attention of most casting directors that you submit for. In these headshots, be sure that you smile and that you look pleasant. LOL And again, try to tell a story with your face so that you can connect with the people that will consider taking a chance on that face.;).

Theatrical head shots are more used less commonly in the film industry but they are more used to represent the characterisitcs of a person. These kinds of headshots are more used when actors try to submit for a specific part that demands specific qualities.

In your acting career, when you shop around for head shots, there are steps that you need to take. I will explain some of the basic steps below.

Make sure that you ask around. Ask and network with plenty of people so that you can feel confident and comfortable with the photographer you work with. If you like a particular person's head shots, ask him/her who did them. Grab a number and give them a call. Do your research and make sure that the person that takes your shots has some kind of credibilty. It is very easy to get caught up with photographers with no experience. If you are serious about acting, then you want your photographer to do it right. Select a photographer who specializes in SOLELY head shots. You will be doing your acting career a favor.

Meet up with plenty of photographers and find out who you believe to be the best fit for you as far as how their styles may compliment your characteristics. Taking head shots can be pretty expensive but they can be one of the greatest investments you can make in your acting career.
